Berlin Flak hit this aircraft. RWG Sgt. Leogrande lost his life, died in the waist. Aircraft became a straggler on route back to England. On the Dutch coast at Texel Island, Flak hit them again. Eight men bailed out. Pilot and the body of Sgt. Leogrande went down with the aircraft in the North Sea, 5 km west of Texel Island. One men resucued from sea, two bodies recovered, 7 MIA. |
Below image; the war graves plot in Ben Burg, Texel Island. Visible (red arrow) is the initial, now empty grave of S/Sgt. Joseph P. McCabe. He was exhumed in 1945 and rests now in US War Cemetery 'Netherlands' in Margraten. The missing crewmembers can be washed ashore and buried in this and northeast of this area, but remained unidentified.
