ALKMAAR GENERAL CEMETERY

War dead in this area usually went to nearby Bergen (aan Zee) cemetery. Nevertheless 3 Allied casualties are interred in Alkmaar. Sgt. Shipley's Whitley bomber crashed in January 1941 in a lake in the dunes. His crew mates were recovered, brought to Amsterdam and buried there. Sgt. Shipley's body was seen laying on the lake bottom months later on the 16th of May. Apparently the connection with the earlier crash in January was not made and therefore he was not buried next to his 3 colleagues in Amsterdam, but here in Alkmaar. Also a Royal Navy seaman rests here. He was a sailor on the 'S.S. Pacific'.
